Founded in 1912, Oscar Heyman & Bros. is one of New York City's longest operating jewelers still in business. Besides being a well known retailer and manufacturer who has produced pieces under their own name, they have also created for Van Cleef & Arpels, Tiffany & Co., and Cartier amongst many others. They are internationally regarded for the immaculate and complex craftsmanship exhibited in their pieces, their superb stone selections, complex Art Deco designs, especially their pictorial strap bracelets, and for being the first American jeweler chosen by Van Cleef & Arpels to create their iconic mystery set jewels.

Asterism is a phenomenon that shows a star floating across the surface of a gem. It is only present in cabochon cut gemstones, most commonly in sapphires and rubies, although it can also occur with quartz, alexandrite, spinel, diopside, and beryl. It occurs when an experienced gem cutter selects a piece of rough with tiny needle like inclusions which reflect light onto the surface of the stone from within and cuts the gem in cabochon to create the best star effect possible.
